Please note that this salary range is accurate as of July 1st, 2024. It reflects our starting rate ($65,000) as well as the compensation for our most senior employees at this time. If this sounds like the place for you to continue to grow, please consider applying to be the Bookstore Director.The Bookstore Director of Operations is responsible for the operations and oversight of all aspects of Busboys and Poets Books, including direct supervision of all bookstore personnel, maintaining and adhering to the mission of Busboys and Poets and making sure that the bookstore is an integral part of the Busboys and Poets operation overall.Aside from overseeing the development of the bookstore staff, the Director is responsible for overseeing the financial health of the bookstore as well. Additionally, the Director assists the Book Buyer with dynamic budget planning to address the financial needs of the business. The Director also assists the Programs Coordinator in event planning and coverage on an as-needed basis for our in-house and off-site events. For larger off-site events planned with high-profile clients and/or the CEO of Busboys and Poets, the Director of Operations serves as the first point of contact.Starting Salary: $65,000 - $71,000This is a full-time 50 hr/week salaried position, with benefits including paid time off, 401k, medical, dental, vision, accident insurance, travel stipend, etc. At Busboys and Poets Books, we pride ourselves on the growth and professional development opportunities we offer to our staff members throughout the year.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strategizes for the bookstore (priorities, policies, how to roll out new programs, data analysis, and setting sales projections and goals)
  • Develops and adapts efficient procedures and reporting for the bookstore
  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, and termination of staff
  • Oversees training and scheduling for all locations
  • Establishes and maintains relationships in the publishing industry
  • Oversees the book events team (training, troubleshooting, marketing, and post-event analysis)
  • Oversees the buying team (budgeting, event and frontlist ordering, training of supervisors)
  • Coordinates with the finance team; developing effective invoicing, returns, and data procedures; planning based on P&L to ensure profitability.
  • Plans and conducts the regular supervisor meeting
  • Leads book-related projects with other departments within the companyThe Requirements
  • 2-4 years of training leadership experience in the restaurant/service industry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to motivate, direct, and train a diverse group of individuals.
  • Proven people management skills, including coaching and developing others, conflict resolution, cultural competence, team building, and performance management.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to quickly identify root causes, develop and activate corrective action in a diplomatic fashion.
  • Training background on a multi-unit level is a huge plus.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, Wisetail, and Canva is preferred.
  • Highly effective writing, proofing, and editing abilities.
  • Well-developed organizational skills and the ability to establish and meet deadlines.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks simultaneously.Schedule:This position requires flexibility and is an 'on call' position with regards to important events and in-store bookstore coverage. You will be working either in our corporate office or in one of the stores. A car is required for mobility between our locations throughout the DC metropolitan region and Columbia, MD.We use eVerify to confirm U.S. Employment eligibility.
