As a senior member of the Linux Administration team, the Senior
Linux Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the University
Linux environment, ensuring they are managed in a secure and modern
fashion. Working collaboratively with other Linux Administration
staff, Platform Engineering, and other operational units, this role
functions as a forward-thinking engineer and administrator who can
also solve complex day-to-day IT problems. This person will need
strong DevOps principles, automation, and system architecture
background. Utilizing tools such as Puppet, Red Hat Satellite, and
AWS CloudFormation, this person will deploy OS patches, provision
new machines, manage configuration states, deploy new AWS
solutions, and troubleshoot existing on-prem and cloud deployments,
ensuring system security, maximum uptime, and service
stability.
This position is considered essential and may be required to work
at the normal work location or an alternative location during a
major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational
emergency to help maintain the continuity of University
services.
Physical Demands:
The employee is also occasionally required to lift and carry
materials up to 50 pounds in weight. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust
focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently
required to sit and talk and listen. The employee is occasionally
required to walk and use hands to operate computers, objects,
tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may
need to work evenings, weekends, and after-hours on occasion.
This position is considered an essential position and may be
required to work at the normal work location or an alternative
location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or
other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of
University services.
Preferences:
* Four (4) years of professional experience supporting the
operations, maintenance, and administration of information
technology infrastructure.
* Experience, including administration and management of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 8 or greater, including installation,
configuration, optimization, backup, and recovery.
* In-depth knowledge of Unix/Linux (RedHat) operating system
internals, client/server computing techniques, distributed systems
management concepts, server virtualization, and all aspects of
computer communications.
* Administration of Linux in both virtualized (Hyper-V) and cloud
(AWS) environments.
Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects, adjust to
changes in priorities, and respond efficiently and effectively to
emergencies.
* Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, multitasking,
communication, and complex troubleshooting skills.
* Experience with automating system configuration and management
with Puppet.
* Ability to gather project requirements, develop detailed project
plans, schedule and execute the project tasks.
* Ability to create and deliver a clear and effective presentation
to small groups (5-20 people).
* Effective written and verbal communication skills. Must assist,
guide, and share information with technical and non-technical
personnel.
* Ability to work well with others in a cooperative work
environment.
* RHCSA/RHCE or equivalent industry-standard certifications.
* AWS Management experience (I.E., Instance deployment, Cloud
formation development, Stack updates/change-sets, AMI creation,
etc.) with AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
* Experience with programming in at least one (1) high-level
language such as Perl, Nodejs, Ruby, or Python.
* Administration of application middleware servers (I.E., JBoss,
Tomcat, Apache).
* Ability to install, modify, integrate, and configure commercial
and open-source software applications and utilities.
* Experience creating Splunk search queries and utilizing Splunk in
the troubleshooting process.
* Strong understanding of network security, firewall
configurations, and securing applications in cloud and on-premises
environments.
* Experience with automation workflows using CI/CD pipelines such
as GitLab CI/CD.
* Working experience in administering containerization
technologies, particularly Docker, in support of maintaining
critical enterprise applications. AWS ECS experience preferred.
* Familiarity with setting up and managing Kerberos, networked file
systems, and services.
* Strong understanding of Linux shell scripting.
* AWS Management experience (I.E., Instance deployment, Cloud
Formation template development, * Stack updates/change-sets, AMI
creation, etc.)
* In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, LDAP, and other core
technologies such as NTP, iSCSI, SAN, NAS, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or
university.
* Experience: Four (4) years of professional experience supporting
the operations, maintenance, and administration of information
technology infrastructure.
Other:
* Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on
a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required
education.
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to lead presentations with small to medium-sized
groups
* Able to organize and provide direction to junior staff
members
* A demonstrated commitment to customer service
* Provides leadership and helps bridge the gap between team manager
and team members on technical topics
* Ability to effectively manage workload and delivery assignments
on time
* Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office
365 or Google Workspaces

Essential Position:
This position is considered essential and may be required to work

Non-Regular Hours:
Ability to participate in a 7/24/365 on-call rotation, working
evenings and/or weekends outside of regular business hours.

Salary Range: $137,000 - $145,000
